Animal Village is a short survival horror with light dating sim elements game made for the Pixel Horror Jam 2016. The game is about exploring the pit in the middle of Animal Village, a quaint little settlement inhabitted by talking animals. Don't talk to the bird-headed man, don't acknowledge him and don't trust him.

The game is compatible with the xbox 360 controller but can also be played with the keyboard.

The controls are X to aim and cancel, Z to accept and to interact, and Enter for pausing. Movement is with the arrow keys.

Feedback encouraged!! Thank you for playing my game!

Edit: Fixed some bugs relating to the controls.

Edit: Added the option to download as a .zip to make it compatible with xb360ce.

VERY COOL! 10/10

Really creepy cute game. Digging it for sure.

Visually well-done game with a surreal setting, but unfortunately it's prone to crashes and save corruption.

I did manage to fix my save file though, so for anyone else who may have the same problem as I did: I went to C:Drive > Users > [Your Account] > App Data > Local > animal and opened the data.sav with a text editor and changed the [2="..."] line to [2="2D0100000100000000000000000000000000F0BF"] (no brackets). Here's a screenshot as an example:

For some reason, that particular line in the .sav file got changed and the game couldn't detect it anymore. If that doesn't work, you can also try to figure it out manually. Here was my method:

  1. Copy your corrupted .sav file somewhere else.
  2. Delete the animal folder.
  3. Start a new game to create a new folder and a fresh .sav file.
  4. Compare the .sav files in a text editor and experiment by pasting lines from the corrupted .sav file to the new file one at a time and try to load the save in the game.

I dont know if the dev still reads these comments but if you do this is amazing and I wish there was more to it.

The controls feel really good, and by that I mean it controls like shit; but not in a bad way but more of a "loose Survival horror tank controls" sort of way.

I also like how enemies dont show up until their in range of your flash light and I never finished the game but theres a lot of potential for scares by putting enemies in corners where the player wouldnt typically look

Unforunately the save system doesn't seem to work for me. I got past the first boss and closed the game and on coming back there wasn't a save found.

two bad endings 8/10

I played this and noted a bug when using the 8bitdo controller to play under Wine. Apparently the game registers the AIM control as being depressed at all times for it. This behavior does not appear when using a standard usb adapter with a SNES controller. Is there any way for me to fix this, or would this be an issue in the source code?

Started playing this game and while it´s good, it looks that saving of the progress doesn´t work there. As when I was entering the I think "Gulag" level, game crashed due running out of memory. So I restarted it, but it told me then that it wasn´t able to find my save. And I was sleeping sometimes in my bed in the village as I thought that this is way to save the game.

Or is there some else method of saving progress?

EDIT: I went through an appdata folder and found a folder "animal" in local Appdata folder (is it the game´s one?), which indeed has some save file in it. But the game still isn´t able to find the save file on launch. So it looks that it isn´t able to load a saved game.

EDIT2: By deleting the mentioned folder above, the saving now seems to work. So it must be the corrupted save, probably by the game crashing, that it wasn´t able to find it anymore.

Will there be a Linux version?

I really enjoyed this little game. Very nice atmosphere, characters and feeling. I'd like to see more of your stuff! Keep up the great work!

Keyboard controls need to be over at classic wasd, this game is painful to play with keyboard.

very good short survival horror despite having such minimal gameplay. the side characters and the overall sense of unease makes this feel like such a fever dream. its a shame i cant find you on social media or anything cause i'd love to see more from you in this vein of animal crossing anti-nostalgia

(+2)(-1)

how do i save i dont understand!!!!! does it save when I die?

also is it s'posed to delete a save if you die too many times

You sleep in the bed in the village.

The game seems to autosave or maybe it´s saved when you sleep in your bed in the village. But sometimes the saving process seems to be broken (the game can´t find your save even when there is one) and to fix it in this case, you need to remove the "animal" folder in the Appdata/local one.

i love this game

The ending was so cryptic and perfect. This game may have only been an hour long, but it is ABSOLUTELY an instant and forever favorite of mine.

I absolutely loved this game! Something about it really just clicked with me and I couldn't get enough of it. It was the perfect balance of challenge and skill. And then the story was so mysterious and engaging. Great work :D 10/10

How do I get the bird to appear near the bottom where he'll ask you for blood, like in the last screenshot? I already talked to him like in the 2nd screenshot and he's not there anymore, but I don't know how to get him to go down there.

This game is cute.  Has underlying forms of spooks which makes it an interesting play.   True horror doesnt come from just jumpscares.  Its the underlying darkness that you see around you.  Thanks for the great game!

This game is adorably terrifying!! I haven't finished it yet, but have enjoyed every minute of gameplay. Thank you for making this game available and for free no less.  I recommend anyone thinking about playing to do so!

Hey, made a video on your game. Played it all in one sitting. Really loved it! Thanks for making such a cool game.

Could we have spent time with the others not on the surface?

is this game compatible with a xbox one controller?

It is!

https://www.twitch.tv/recklessvillengame Streaming your game on twitch! So far I love it :) Good job!!

Really awesome stuff! Seemed somewhat Undertale inspired but certainly more than made a mark in its own right. Neat visuals and challenging, but fun, gameplay. Nice job!

Hi there, uh quick question is there a way to make the game into windowed mode so i can record the game itself. If you get this email me  for a reply or something (its firel2802@gmail.com) thanks senpai~!

Hey man, I usually don't post my comments on games, however me and my viewers really like your game and I would like you to know that, here is my video if you want to see.

How do you change the controls? The fucking bosses are impossible on keyboard and Xbox controller when you have to press the B button which is right next to the x button which makes my shots not register.

WOW. I loved this game. I love everything about it, especially the bosses. I loved the gunshot sound. It almost sounds like a real gun. Theres only one thing i feel couldve been done much better. The story. It seemed great at first but then it kind of dropped off. I found a lot of notes that i could read throughout the game but there were a lot more pieces of paper lying around you cant read. I did like that the characters would tell you about themselves some. what about the humans tho? what happened to them? why is it an animal village now? Who was the old king? Why was he locked away? I just have so many unanswered questions i thought would be answered as i progressed but sadly they were not. Still this game was fantastic and i hope you do a second animal village at some point.

This game was fantastic. I went in expecting a sort of dark animal crossing-esque game and got something so much more. The atmosphere in this game is fantastic- the minimalist use of music and the simplistic designs for the sprites gave very strong vibe of 'nothing is scarier'. The urge to explore and plunge deeper is very strong, without anything explicit telling you you need to do this. You feel forced to put yourself in danger without any specific directive ordering you to do so, which creates a nice sense of anxiety. The deeper down you get, the more I could really feel the weight of all the floors above me, knowing how far away I was from the top floor- even if it would become accesible again fairly easily, there was still this amazing sensation of distance and isolation. Not fully understanding how all of these buildings had been thrown down the pit really mystified everything for me, feeling like I was exploring some abandoned civilization, only to find other people just chilling down there. Knowing I wasn't supposed to talk to the bird definitely made me very paranoid when I wound up speaking to him the first time. This game was also a lot longer than I was expecting it to be, and I have to say I'm really impressed by how much content you managed to created in such a short amount of time! This is easily in my top 5 horror games I've ever played, I think I'm just going to have to sit and digest everything I've just played through now.

I had a lot of fun with this game. Its length is fitting with its concept making the pacing really good. The combat system isn't complicated, but isn't without challenge which is quite satisfying. The story is interesting and delightfully gore-filled.

The only negative I would want to point out, is the aiming system. It would possibly be better if you could aim with the mouse, considering it's hard to get those enemies diagonal to you.

I made a let's play of this, if anyone wants to have a look: (warning: contains excessive cussing and crude "humor") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4gr3X7zMfs

Here my video on this game...

Btw you need the targeting system to be with the mouse.

over all great and fun game!

Very awesome game. Very well made and creepy in an unnerving sort of way.

I made a video of my playthrough but after reading some of the comments (after I played) I see I missed at least one big secret, so I may have to go back into it.
